The Charm of Central Lombok: A Beauty Often Overlooked
While most tourists head straight to the southern beaches or climb Rinjani in the north, Central Lombok holds a charm that is often overlooked. This region is the heart of Lombok Island — a place where lush rural nature, authentic Sasak culture, and a rare sense of stillness come together as one.
With Herman Explorer, we present the Explore Central Lombok package, specially designed to uncover the hidden beauty of this central part of the island.
Traditional Sasak Villages
Central Lombok is home to several traditional Sasak villages that have preserved their authenticity. Penujak Village is known as a center for traditional pottery. Here, artisans — mostly women — create various household items from clay using techniques passed down through generations without the use of any machinery. Watching their skilled hands shape clay into works of art is a simple yet deeply moving experience.
Sukarara Village is another destination not to be missed. Here, Sasak woven fabrics are made using traditional hand looms, not machines. Each piece of cloth takes days to weeks to complete, and every motif carries deep philosophical meaning. Participants in our package can even try weaving themselves as part of an interactive cultural experience.
Hills and Natural Scenery
Central Lombok also offers breathtaking natural landscapes. Merese Hill in the Tanjung Aan area is one of the best spots to enjoy the panoramic view of Lombok’s southern sea. From the hilltop, reachable by a roughly 20-minute walk, the vast blue of the Indian Ocean stretches wide, paired with the curves of the bay and stunning white coastline below.
During the rainy season, the hills of Central Lombok transform into an extraordinary expanse of green. The terraced rice fields around the Pujut and Praya districts create a highly distinctive and photogenic landscape — proof that Lombok’s beauty is not limited to its coastline.
Culinary Tour and Traditional Markets
One of the favorite parts of this journey is an early morning visit to a traditional market in Central Lombok. Here, you can feel the true pulse of local life — vegetable sellers, fresh-caught fish, traditional snacks, and various spices whose fragrance fills the air.
Herman Explorer partners with several local families to offer a hands-on cooking experience. Participants are invited to shop for ingredients at the market, then cook together with local women using traditional Sasak recipes. This is the most authentic way to truly understand and fall in love with a place.
Central Lombok teaches us that true adventure does not always mean climbing the highest peak or diving the deepest sea. Sometimes it lives in simplicity — in the smile of a local, in the sound of a hand loom, and in a cup of coffee served on the porch of a traditional house. Herman Explorer is ready to take you there.
