Lombok’s Hidden Waterfalls: A Refreshing Adventure Deep in the Forest
Lombok is not only about beaches and mountains. Behind the lush tropical forests that blanket the foothills of Mount Rinjani and the hills scattered across the island, stunning waterfalls lie hidden — clear, refreshing, and still far from the crowds. This is a side of Lombok that few people know, and Herman Explorer is here to take you to discover it.
Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep
At the foot of Mount Rinjani, in the Senaru area, two waterfalls can be visited in a single day. Sendang Gile is the first — a tiered waterfall with a strong flow and a thundering sound that stirs something deep inside. The trail to Sendang Gile is not too demanding, around 10–15 minutes of walking along a well-paved stone path, making it suitable for all ages including families.
From Sendang Gile, the journey continues for another 30–45 minutes through the forest and across a suspension bridge to reach Tiu Kelep. This waterfall is more hidden and more dramatic. It stands roughly 45 meters tall with a natural pool at its base that is perfect for swimming. The water is cold and refreshing — even just touching it feels like bathing in paradise. According to local belief, anyone who bathes in Tiu Kelep will be blessed with good fortune and youth. Believe it or not, the experience itself is one you will never forget.
Tiu Teja and the Rainbow Waterfall
A little further in the North Lombok area lies Tiu Teja — which in the Sasak language means “Rainbow Waterfall.” The name is not without reason. At certain times in the morning, the spray of water meeting sunlight creates a small, beautiful rainbow around the waterfall. To reach it, you need to trek for about 1–1.5 hours through forest and small streams — quite a challenge, but every step is rewarded by the beauty waiting at the end of the trail.
Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu
In the northern part of Central Lombok, in the village of Aik Berik, two highly unique waterfalls sit close to each other and are often visited together in a single trip. Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu are two waterfalls that most tourists have never heard of.
What makes Benang Kelambu especially remarkable is its unusual form. Water does not fall directly from a cliff, but instead seeps through long hanging roots along the cliff’s edge, creating what looks like a living curtain or mosquito net of water. This sight is truly one of a kind and almost unmatched anywhere else in Indonesia. The combination of green moss, white cascading water, and the fresh forest air makes this place feel like something straight out of a fairy tale.
